Q&A Home > H > Hypostatic Union There are 5 questions in this category.
- Also, in his book So Many Years With People's Questions - Part IV, regarding the question "[12] THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE APOSTLES WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT" H.H. Pope Shenouda III states:
"But the relationship that the Lord Christ had with the Holy Spirit was hypostatic and quite distinct from that of the apostles or anyone else with the Spirit. This is because Christ's relationship with the Holy Spirit is eternal, and is based on equality."
What does H.H. mean by hypostatic here? Does he mean Hypostatic Union (of the human nature and the divine nature of Christ)? What is the difference between hypostatic in this quote and hypostatic in Hypostatic Union? - I am not sure if this is relevant or not, but the second lecture on Christology
Lecture II: The Nature of Our Lord Jesus Christ states:
"His Divine Nature is united with His Human Nature in a complete Hypostatic (personal) Union without mingling, confusion, alteration, or separation."
and
"The union of the spirit & body is a hypostatic one. So is the union of the Divine Logos & the Human Nature in the virgin's womb. A hypostatic, real, self-essential union not a mere connection that separates as Nestorius claimed."
My questions are:
- Also, is the lecture using hypostatic, real and self-essential union as synonyms, all meaning hypostatic union i.e. so that hypostatic means real and self essential? Or is it using three different terms/descriptions?
- Does hypostatic mean personal as mentioned in my first quote of this lecture or does it mean real and self-essential?
- What does self-essential union mean?
- In Christology, what is meant by Hypostatic Union?
- In His Holiness' book The Creed, in the section Of the Holy Spirit and of the Virgin Mary, H.H. Pope Shenouda III states:
"Of the Holy Spirit and of the Virgin Mary: The Holy Spirit descended hypostatically into her womb.
It is an exception because the Holy Spirit does not descend hypostatically on humans, but He descended on the Virgin Mary for two reasons: first that the Lord Christ might be in her womb through no man, and second, to sanctify her womb so that the baby born of her might not inherit the original sin.
Thus, her conception of the Lord Christ was an immaculate conception."
What does H.H. mean by hypostatically here? Does he mean Hypostatic Union (of the human nature and the divine nature of Christ)? What is the difference between hypostatically in this quote and hypostatic in Hypostatic Union? - Is Christ's Body & Blood in the Eucharist united to His Divine Nature because of the Hypostatic Union?
