I asked around in church regarding the "daughters of men" and the "sons of God" part in Genesis chapter 6, and I received the same general reply from everyone, that the sons of God were God's people and the daughters of men were not. How can this be, when this chapter is directly following Noah's flood?

Actually, this chapter preceded the Flood! "Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. And the Lord God said, My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred twenty years.' .... "Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, 'I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord" (Genesis 6:1-8). These verses talk about how evil entered the hearts of the children of God by co-mingling with the children of the world. God reveals here His anguish at man's weaknesses and continuous predisposition to sin. The flood takes place in Chapter 7.
