I've been asking God for a sign of approval on something I have been praying for. Is this an acknowledged way of hearing from God, that is through certain signs we put ourselves?

We have to be careful with that. The best thing is to put our Lord Jesus Christ the first in our life. In order for us to hear from God and be sure that it is from God, we have to guard our heart with all diligence as the Holy Bible verse instructs us, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23).

It is important to remember that with God all things are known and therefore, we must rely on Him.

"Putting in mind that hidden things inside the heart are opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do."

My advice is to keep praying for this issue until you have peace in your heart and consult also your spiritual father.
