I recently had weight loss surgery. My weight was causing me to have high blood pressure and other health problems. I also did not like the way I looked. Is this considered a sin?

Taking care of our bodies is just as important as caring for the talents that God has given us. You must eat healthy and cooperate with your physicians. Some people are overweight due to heredity, and some are overweight due to carelessness and gluttony. Careless and gluttony are sins, and require confession. It is not a sin that you had this surgery to improve your health, and will continue to correct the bad eating habits and neglecting proper nutrition that caused your obesity and contributed to your weight problems. However, if this surgery was merely for cosmetic purposes, and you continue to be careless, you will gain the weight again, and it will have more negative impact on your self esteem. Thus, eat healthy without neglecting your fasts and exercise regularly. Food is often part of social events, but there are so many good options now for healthy meals and wholesome gatherings.

"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31).
