Q&A Home > C > Circumcision Why is it a choice to circumcise or not circumcise? The external rite of circumcision is no longer required as a symbol of God's people. The rite of Baptism is a Holy Mystery, by which we die and rise with Christ. Thus, baptism replaced circumcision. The Lord's disciples and apostles conferenced about this matter and agreed that mandatory circumcision as a symbol of faith is no longer required (1 Corinthians 7:17-20; Galatians 5:1-6). The medical community today advises circumcision for hygienic reasons, but for spiritual reasons or ecclesiastical rites, the Church does not impose it.
"In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead" (Colossians 2:11-12).
