How come God promises to give long life to those who obey parents instead of some other promise? Would we not prefer to be with God in paradise instead of spending more time here on earth?

Length of days signifies an abundance of blessings, rather than just a few extra years tagged onto one's life. These blessings are bestowed from God at the prayers and intercessions of one's parents. The Lord Jesus Christ made Himself a real example of what He expects from us regarding how to honor our parents (John 2:1-12; Luke 2:41-52).
