Is masturbation sin?

Masturbation is a sin, "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?" (1 Corinthians 6:19). Sexuality is not evil. It is actually blessed, and intended to be enjoyed in intimacy with one's spouse. Therefore, masturbation is a selfish act, where one wants to just please himself. However, try to remember that self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit (cf. Galatians 5:23). Masturbation requires some fantasizing about sexual experiences. Thus, this may involve pornography and lustful imagination about someone. "But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). Because of the pleasure and relief that it provides, masturbation can become a serious addiction. Furthermore, because it is sexual and secretive, it produces a lot of guilt and shame, which may inhibit you from confessing about it. Thus, you may be reluctant to take communion or to go to church. Nonetheless, seek spiritual guidance, fight the urge, stay busy, and avoid too much TV. Even if you do not watch provocative programs, the commercials are often designed to be sensually enticing. Thus, protect yourself from all temptations, and be assured that God is loving and forgiving.
