Is it ok to ask God for protection from such things, i.e., if someone is not sure if such things are true or not and so prays to God just in case?

Yes. Until you feel more comfortable that these superstitions mean nothing and are harmless, ask God to not only protect you, but to rid you of these irrational thoughts.
