It appears from the Holy Bible that out of fear most of the disciples forgot about what the Lord told them about His resurrection. The chief priests remembered and wanted the tomb sealed and guarded until the 3rd day.

It is not that the chief priests believed in Christ's word, but rather because of their unbelief, thought that His disciples would steal His body to make it appear as though He had resurrected.
