According to the Holy Book of 2 Samuel 21:7-9, why would David promise to spare Mephibosheth and then deliver him to his death?

Mephibosheth, the son of Rizpah, (v8) is not the same as Jonathan's son of the same name (v. 7). Rizpah was Saul's concubine (3:7) not the wife of Jonathan.
