Q&A Home > W > Working Mothers In a situation like this, what does God expect of both partners; so that each can be happy and satisfied? From the beginning, God created man. Then "the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him" (Gen 2:18). The definition of the word 'helper' is one who gives assistance or support. In marriage our Lord teaches us "And the two shall become one flesh'; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh" (Mark 10:8). Regarding working outside of home, both parties should discuss the situation at hand, looking at all the pros and cons, and come to an agreeable decision that satisfies both of them even if one has to sacrifice for the benefit of the family. The Holy Book of Proverbs describes a virtuous wife as a working woman to some degree, she bought land and worked on it (Proverbs 31:16) and she made clothing and sold it in the marketplace (Proverbs 31:24). She diligently sees to the need of her family "She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness" (Proverbs 31:27).
Now the question is; can she do it without neglecting her responsibilities as a wife and mother? Some women can, others cannot. If a woman is unable to do both, her responsibility is first to fulfill her duties at home.
The most important thing in life is to be a member of the family of God, for this can easily fill whatever gaps there may be in our physical families.
