Q&A Home > S > Suicide I would like to know the verses useful in helping someone wanting to end his life by suicide. When talking to a suicidal person, the main point you have to stress is that God loves him with an everlasting, powerful love. Suicide denies God's love for us.
A suicidal person often wonders if God does love him. It might be because he had gone through tough times in his life. Satan often takes advantage of the negative things in our lives and try to blame God for them. Hence, the thought that God is a God who does not care for, does not listen to and does not love us. Yet St. John tells us this is not so, "Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us" (1 Jn 3:16).
Another problem a suicidal person faces is the loss of confidence in himself and in the possibility of a make up even if the worst happens. The Word of God is very clear that no matter how much of a failure we may be or whatever sins we have committed, God still loves us and wants us to commit our lives to Him.
Convince this person that he should always have hope in the Lord. The Holy Book of Psalms gives us many verses of hope:Holy Book of Ps 31:24
"Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the LORD."
Holy Book of Ps 33:18-22
"Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name. Let Your mercy, O LORD, be upon us, just as we hope in You."
Holy Book of Ps 43:5
"Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God."
Holy Book of Ps 119:116-117
"Uphold me according to Your word, that I may live; and do not let me be ashamed of my hope. Hold me up, and I shall be safe, and I shall observe Your statutes continually."
