Q&A Home > S > Stem Cell Research What is the Church's view on stem-cell research? Is it wrong to take a living zygote (a potential human being) from a mother's fetus, and use it in the lab to create different cells in different people for the purpose of curing different diseases? The idea of stem-cell research is promising in theory but spiritually unconvincing; because of its potential intrusiveness in the formation of a fetus. The zygote is basically a fertilized egg with the prospective of further development. As Christians, we have an obligation to preserve the integrity of any human being from the very beginning and their right to a life potentially realizable. There is another valuable research that is less invasive and has compelling results. It requires the use of the umbilical cord and placenta after the birth of a child. This procedure is more appealing because the tissue would be discarded anyway, has no effect on the unborn child, and would not expose the mother or fetus to any harm, nor compromise the value of life in anyway. Below is one link, but there are many others.
