St. Diadochos of Photiki said, "All men are made in God's image; but to be in His likeness is granted only to those who through great love have brought their own freedom into subjection to God. For only when we do not belong to ourselves do we become like Him who through love has reconciled us to Himself. No one achieves this unless he persuades his soul not to be distracted by the false glitter of this life."

What does he mean by "distracted"?

By distracted he means not to be deceived by the glamour of this earthly life, and thus forget about our walk with God which leads to eternal life.

To be living in godliness with the Lord is not acceptable to the devil who will do his best to make us deviate from this path. Sometimes he succeeds in distracting us, but a wise person will realize this quickly and returns to the right path. This is a continuous struggle in life for St. Paul says, "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Eph 6:12). However, God gives us the means by which we can fight back (Eph 6:13-18).
