The high school group at my church is not very interested in hymns and deaconship. I've tried to encourage them to attend hymns classes, Tasbeha, or even just to come early on Sunday to attend the Liturgy as deacons. Unfortunately, very few of them do. I understand that not every person has the gift of hymns or deaconship but at the same time, is it OK to attribute that as the reason for all these boys? Do I keep pushing and encouraging?

When it comes to those who have already been ordained in any rank of deaconship, even the young chanters, it is important that they understand that this is a responsibility for which they are accountable. Whether it was by their choice or their parents, they need to confess this shortcoming to their confessor fathers to obtain absolution...As for the students who are not ordained, it is better that they do not take this vow if they are not personally committed nor dedicated to this service. You may teach hymns in the Sunday School class as part of the class. Perhaps, this will inspire the boys to want to learn more. Many people serve wholeheartedly without an official title nor in a specified service, but because they are caring individuals, they just naturally respond to a need at hand...Service is a personal choice and a response to a higher calling. As servants, we ought to pray and encourage the students/children entrusted in our care to serve. Nonetheless, it is not mandatory. We should not in any way try to coerce them or make them feel guilty for not serving in a formal capacity. Ignite a passion for service and introduce the youth to a wide range of services, so that each one can find a ministry conducive to his ability and interest..."As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God" (1 Peter 4:10).
