Q&A Home > M > Music/Music Notes A group in our church took advantage of Abouna's limited knowledge of the American culture, and got his consent to sing a gospel Rap on New year's Eve. Is that allowed? "Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and praise is beautiful" (Psalm 147:1 NKJV). There are many occasions throughout the year for presentations and celebrations to be enjoyed by each family and the entire congregation. The children and the youth in our churches should be encouraged to present in an appropriate manner hymns, praises, and/or skits based on a theme they learned about throughout that specific season. These productions then become a lesson in action.
Many Americans would agree that Rap Music has created a very negative impact on society; and is often associated with violence and obscenities. However, because this form of music is so popular among the youth, the group you have mentioned have justified the means to reach the goal. It is certainly not an excuse for poor judgment. Seize this opportunity to teach that what you say is just as important as how you say it. Even if Abouna was unaware of the nuance and repercussions of this style of music, why did not the servants alert Abouna?
