Q&A Home > H > Holy Spirit Does the Coptic Orthodox Church believe in the "Gifts of the Holy Spirit" as taught by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 12-14 as still active today? There are many gifts of the Holy Spirit, mentioned and not mentioned. The emphasis is on the Holy Spirit, Himself, and His desire to grant a diversity of gifts within a range, and as He so wills, to equip His servants for His ministry. "But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills" (1 Corinthians 12:11). As the church needs church change, the diversity of the gifts varies. For example, the gift of speaking in tongues was needed more in the early church to evangelize and establish the Christian house of worship throughout the world. Therefore, the duration of this gift was limited to that era and for that purpose.
