Q&A Home > G > Garden of Eden How do we know it was an apple tree since it only mentions in the Bible that it was a fruit tree? We do not know exactly what kind of fruit it was that was on that forbidden tree to eat in the Garden of Eden. We do not know for sure if all those trees produced edible fruit. God permitted Adam and Eve to eat of all the trees except for that particular one. It may be possible that whatever that tree produced, if indeed it was a fruit, that it did not regenerate after Adam and Eve were exiled from Paradise. We simply do not know. The apple may be symbolic because of its beauty.
"Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, 'Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die'" (Genesis 2:15-17).
