Q&A Home > F > Feminism Is there a place for feminism in the Coptic Orthodox Church? Feminism, according to Webster's definition of the word, is the movement to win political, economical and social equality for women. This equality is already acknowledged by our Church. Working outside of home is acceptable and we do have many Coptic Orthodox women who hold great positions in society whether doctors, lawyers, executive directors of prestigious companies etc. Within the Church hierarchy we do follow the Holy Bible and the teachings of the early fathers in that women do not hold a clergy position. However, women can serve as deaconesses; and also as members of the board of deacons in some churches; having, administratively, decision making roles.
